Scale & Clean
A scale and clean is the cleaning of the teeth carried out by your dentist. The procedure involves cleaning around the gum line on the back and front of your teeth to remove any plaque and tartar. After the clean patients can request an additional fluoride treatment. Once the full clean in completed, your dentist will provide you with tips and instructions to improve your overall oral hygiene.
Why should I get a scale and clean?
Brushing and flossing alone doesn’t always remove all of the plaque from your teeth. This will eventually go hard and can only be removed by a dentist or a hygienist, so it is important to get a scale and clean done at least once a year. Having a large build-up of plaque and tartar can lead to dental problems down the road such as tooth decay and gum disease, as well as bad breath.
What does the procedure involve?
During the scaling portion of the procedure, the dentist will use a small instrument called a scaler to scrape away the plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. The dentist will also remove any plaque deposits stuck on or in the between the teeth. After removing and flushing out all the debris, the dentist will polish your teeth to kill any lingering bacteria and make your teeth feel and look extra clean.
After the scale and clean you may opt for a fluoride treatment, which involves the dentist applying a cool fluoride-infused foam on the surface of your teeth to protect them against acid and bacteria.
