Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening involves bleaching the teeth to lighten their colour. After treatment, the teeth look a few shades whiter, but not usually bright white.

Teeth whitening is an optional procedure — it is very rarely a necessity.

Whitening products typically use the chemicals hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Only registered dental practitioners can legally use the most concentrated — and thus most effective — whitening solutions.

The bleach soaks through the tooth’s enamel top layer and into the dentine (inner yellow layer), the main part of the inside of the tooth which is slightly softer than the enamel. The bleach reacts with the coloured molecules that cause discolouration. The dentine then becomes lighter and the teeth look whiter. Bleach can also make the enamel surface more reflective, which looks whiter too.

Here at Agile Dentistry Geraldton, we take moulds of your teeth to custom make trays to fit your teeth. We find that by getting you to bleach your teeth over several nights at home you get a better result, less sensitivity and in the future, you can easily rebleach your teeth as needed.

Teeth whitening is not recommended if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • have sensitive teeth

  • have gum disease or shrinkage

  • have cracks or exposed dentine

Note that whitening treatments will not whiten existing crownsveneers or fillings.

Veneers

Veneers are a very thin cover made from porcelain, which is bonded on the front of the existing tooth.

When would I need a veneer?

Veneers are used to enhance the appearance of the teeth and mouth and can protect the tooth’s surface from damage.

Dentures

What is a denture?

A denture is an oral appliance that is worn to replace any lost or missing teeth.

Why bother with a denture?

Replacing lost or missing teeth with dentures has many benefits for health and appearance. The main benefit being it can provide back biting and chewing power. A more superficial benefit would include the support to the cheeks and lips.

What kinds of dentures are there?

Dentures are made of several different materials including, acrylic, plastic or even metal. It is best to discuss this with the dentist as they can provide an insight as to what might suit you and your mouth best.

Crowns & Bridges

What is a crown?

A crown is a covering for a tooth that has been weakened through either root canal treatments or large fillings. It acts as a shield over the tooth structure providing an extra layer of strength. Crowns are typically made from porcelain, ceramic, or even gold.

What does the procedure involve?

A crown is prepared over 2 appointments, the first involves trimming around the tooth to allow enough space around the final crown. Once trimmed an impression of the remaining tooth is taken to ensure a perfect fit, a temporary crown is then made to fill the space. Here at Agile Dentistry, we send all of our crowns down to Perth to be handmade ensuring the perfect crown every time.

Once the crown is back into the clinic, which is a 2-week turn around the final appointment is made to permanently cement the crown into the mouth.
