Extractions – including wisdom teeth & surgical

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. This can be done either under local anaesthetic in the chair or whilst under a general anaesthetic in the hospital.

When are extractions needed?

Commonly teeth are extracted due to breakage or decay. Other reasons to extract teeth include:

  • Dental abscess
  • The tooth is so broken down there is not enough left to fix
  • Severe gum disease causing the teeth to be too loose to eat
  • Fractured teeth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Cosmetic

What does the procedure involve?

Simple extraction: This is usually performed under local anaesthetics. Your dentist will lift the tooth using an elevator and remove it with dental forceps, by rocking the tooth back and forth, with steady pressure applied with controlled force.

Surgical Extractions: This is a more invasive procedure for teeth that cannot be easily accessed, for example is the tooth is broken under the gum line. If a surgical extraction is required, your dentist will talk you through the procedure and recovery time.
